As well as the purely natural, I am interested in human intervention on the Island. At Orford Ness, human activity in the form of a history of scientific experimentation on behalf of the military, is highly visible. After abandoning Orford Ness in the 1980’s, even after clearing ordinance, the Ministry of Defence left sites littered with debris, leaving undisturbed time records of experimental projects. I am reminded of the film/book ‘Stalker’/’Roadside Picnic’ - Tarkovsky/Strugatsky, set in a remote zone in Russia, where alien artifacts have been dumped after a visit. I feel the recent reversal in policy at Orford Ness illustrates in a microcosm, the degree to which industrial activity can expand before it has an irreversable impact on the organic fabric of the landscape.
